Financial Aid

HUSI pizza night 2018

Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute
HUSI 2026 | June 22–August 7

Prospective HUSI students are encouraged to apply for financial aid from the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and other funding sources.

The HUSI Scholarship

The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) provides a substantial amount of financial aid each year to support participation in the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute (HUSI) and registration in HUSI courses offered through the Harvard Summer School (HSS). Funding primarily supports tuition, but a very limited number of full scholarships include tuition plus room and board in on-campus housing.

Applications are due by February 12, 2026!

One letter of recommendation is due one week after the application deadline. Decisions will be announced in April.

Eligibility, Requirements, and Expectations

  • Scholarships are highly competitive and need-based. Applications are evaluated based on financial need, merit, motivation, and the impact that HUSI coursework will have on the student's academic and professional development.
  • Scholarship recipients are expected dedicate their full attention and best efforts to their coursework. Students may apply for funding to support 4 or 8 credits and must register for credit (rather than noncredit or ungraded).
  • Scholarship recipients are required to actively participate in HUSI programming, including attending the weekly public lecture series.
  • Scholarship recipients are asked to contribute one article to the HUSI Blog.
  • Scholarship funds are paid by HURI directly to the Harvard Summer School.

Application Instructions

Applications for a HUSI Scholarship consist of the following parts: HUSI Enrollment Form, online application form, application essay, CV, transcript, and one letter of recommendation.

The online application is located on Harvard's CARAT application platform. All application materials should be submitted directly on the CARAT platform, except for the HUSI Enrollment Form

Internal Harvard applicants will access CARAT with their HarvardKey. External, non-Harvard applicants must first create a Harvard Guest Account.

Upload the following PDF documents with your online application:

  • Application Essay | Who are you and why do you want to participate in HUSI? Please include a description of your academic or professional area of expertise. How would your planned coursework contribute to your professional goals? Please also include a statement of your need for financial assistance. 500-700 words.
  • CV | Please provide your academic and professional background, including previous degrees and current degree programs, academic field, and dates. 3 pages or less.
  • Transcript | Please submit the transcript for your most recent degree program. An unofficial digital copy issued to students is sufficient.

One letter of recommendation is required. The letter should be from a university professor who can speak to the applicant's academic merit and goals, but letters from employers will be accepted if the applicant has not recently attended school. It must be uploaded directly to CARAT by the recommender and is due one week after the application deadline. Applicants are responsible for contacting their recommender in advance and ensuring that the letter is received by the deadline.

Other Funding Sources

US and international students should fully exhaust all available funding opportunities at their home institutions. Canadian students may be able to receive help from the Ontario Student Assistance Program, which offers a mix of grants and loans for students taking classes at approved institutions. Harvard graduate students should apply for a GSAS Summer School Tuition Fellowship and Harvard Extension School degree candidates should apply there for funding.
