Joseph Lesawyer served as president of Young Ukraine and the Ukrainian National Home in Brooklyn. He was elected treasurer of the Ukrainian Youth League of North America in 1940, and he was a member of the Ukrainian University Society of New York. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and served until 1946. After the war Lesawyer returned to his career as a real estate broker. He continued to be active in Ukrainian American professional life serving as vice-president (1950-1954) and president (1961-1978) of the Ukrainian National Association, and vice-president (1961-1978) of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He also served as president (1971-1973) of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. The papers consist of some correspondence and photographs with the bulk of the collection containing fliers, brochures, minutes, and anniversary booklets for the numerous Ukrainian American organizations.
