This lecture presents highlights from the forthcoming book by Dr. Tatiana Tairova-Yakovleva, Ivan Teodorovitch Bohun, dedicated to the outstanding Ukrainian colonel and political figure of the 17th century. Based on substantial archival material, the author revises the main stages of his biography. The author shows Bohun’s biography in the context of the formation of the Hetmanate, including its domestic and foreign policy. Why did Bohun engage in conflict with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, what were his political ideals, who were his friends and allies? What did he look like? Tairova-Yakovleva will also introduce new findings regarding Bohun’s relationship with Bohdan Khmelnytsky and his acute conflict with Boyar Sheremetev.
Dr. Tatiana Tairova-Yakovleva is the author of around 140 articles and 16 monographs on the history of Ukraine, including Ivan Mazepa and the Russian Empire (McGill & Queen, 2020). In 2004, she founded the Center for Ukrainian Studies at St. Petersburg State University. One of the primary goals of the Center was the publication of archival materials on Ukrainian history. Tairova-Yakovleva was the Director of the Center for Ukrainian Studies until 2022, when she was dismissed from St. Petersburg State University for her anti-war position. She is currently an independent scholar and Fellow at the Gerda Henkel Stiftung in Germany. Tairova-Yakovleva was born in Leningrad and graduated from Leningrad State University in 1989. She was awarded a Doctoral Thesis Fellowship from CIUS and earned her kandidat nauk degree in 1994 on the history of the Ruin at the Institute of History, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2004, Tairova-Yakovleva earned her dokotr nauk degree on the history of the Hetmanate from St. Petersburg State University.
