A web map is an interactive display of geographic information that you can use to tell stories and answer questions. The contemporary atlas of MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine aims to contribute to a reconceptualization of regionalism in Ukraine and a better understanding of social and political processes in Ukrainian localities before and after the Revolution of Dignity.
The project uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to map statistical and sociological data. Mapping data on the region (oblast) level avoids arbitrary scaling into predefined macro-regions and allows researchers to explore and explain intraregional and cross-regional differences and similarities.
The project contributes to the comparative cross-regional analysis of identities and historical memory, linguistic and religious landscapes, and attitudes about the situation in Donbas and Crimea and its fallout. Representing data from 2013-2019, several maps visualize how respondents ranked Ukraine’s problems, such as the armed conflict in the East, in terms of importance. The project also presents data on Ukrainians’ opinions about the conflict, their attitude toward IDPs (measured through social distancing toward IDPs from Crimea and Donbas), and the number of officially registered IDPs in each oblast between 2015-2020.
Viktoriya Sereda is a sociologist who has been a senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 2020. She is also a professor at the Department of Sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University. She taught at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv starting in 2002. In 2021/22 academic year she was a research fellow at the Imre Kertesz Kolleg in Jena. In the Spring semester of 2021, she was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Basel. Sereda has either led or participated in over 30 sociological research projects on Ukrainian society and its regional dimensions. From 2011 to 2017, she was the head of the sociological team for the project “Region, Nation and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary and Transcultural Reconceptualization of Ukraine” organized by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In 2016–2017 and 2019–2020 she was the MAPA Research Fellow at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, where she developed a digital atlas of social changes in Ukraine after the Euromaidan.
Kostyantyn Bondarenko is an IT Professional at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University and Project Manager for the MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine program. Since 2001, he has worked at the Institute to improve and expand its IT services by designing and developing websites, databases, and creating GIS maps and web applications. As the Project Manager for the MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine program, he manages all technical and organizational aspects of the MAPA. He has worked on all modules of the MAPA program, presented MAPA projects at several conferences and is currently working on joint GIS projects between the Ukrainian Research Institute and its partners in the US and abroad.
