Graduate students currently enrolled in a degree program at Harvard are invited to apply for a HURI Graduate Research Fellowship, which supports research on a Ukrainian studies topic during the upcoming academic year. Priority is given to PhD students who have completed their general exams, have an approved dissertation prospectus, and are in the process of researching or writing a dissertation.

The fellowship provides a total award of up to $20,000 and is intended to replace teaching commitments for one academic term (5 months, Fall or Spring). The purpose is to support full-time work on a dissertation project, resulting in significant progress during the fellowship term.

## Application Requirements

CARAT Application, including the following:

• Current (unofficial) Harvard transcript

• CV/Resume, 3 pages max

• Dissertation Project Description, 3-6 double-spaced pages

• Two (2) Letters of Recommendation, including from your primary dissertation advisor, uploaded directly to CARAT by your recommenders. Due one week after the application deadline.

## Eligibility

• Open to all Harvard graduate students. Students must be enrolled in a degree program at Harvard at the time of application and during the fellowship term.

• Research projects must be on a topic directly related to Ukraine

• This fellowship supports scholarly research and writing. It can not be used to support coursework/tuition.

• Priority will be given to doctoral students who have completed their general exams and require term-time dedicated to making significant progress on their dissertation.

• Fellowship recipients may not receive other concurrent funding or income during the fellowship term, including other grants, fellowships, or teaching appointments. However, some exceptions may be considered. Recipients are responsible for disclosing any other funding or income sources.



 

##  Applications are due on 10 April 2026 

The application deadline for a fellowship during AY 2026-2027 (Fall 2026 or Spring 2027) is Friday, 10 April 2026.

Recommendation letters will be accepted one week beyond the deadline.

Students wishing to apply for a HURI Graduate Research Fellowship must prepare an application using Harvard's Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT), available starting in January each year.
