 Andrey Kurkov, a prolific contemporary Ukrainian writer, is best known for *Death and the Penguin*, published in English translation in 2001 (the original was published in Russian in 1996). His most recent novel, *Grey Bees*, is about a beekeeper navigating daily life in the “grey zone” between the active conflict and Ukrainian territory.

 This event will feature a discussion of how Kurkov balances writing about contemporary Ukraine and Ukrainians with his creative, sometimes even fantastical, scenarios and characters. It serves as both the culmination of [this summer's TCUP Book Club](/news/tcup-kurkov) and the final event of the HUSI Public Event Series.
