“With Ribbons and Flags” is the last project by Ukrainian artist and activist [**Davyd Chychkan**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Chichkan) (1986-2025). He created this graphic series in 2022-2024, before volunteering to fight on the frontline himself. His images represent the participants of the anarchist and anti-authoritarian left movements who are currently fighting in this war or have already died defending Ukraine. Chychkan’s artistic career was marked by politically and socially engaged art, and these works depict the diverse political views of those fighting for Ukraine. “With Ribbons and Flags” was exhibited around Ukraine, beginning in March 2022, until the artist was mortally wounded in combat. Davyd Chychkan died from wounds in a Zaporizhzhya hospital on August 10, 2025.

Exhibition curated by Emily Channell-Justice and Sam Veremchuk.

## About the Artist

Davyd Chychkan (1986-2025) was born in Kyiv to a family of artists. Preferring to consider himself a “drawer” or “draftsman” rather than an artist, Chychkan’s art was informed by his own political identity as an anarchist and anti-authoritarian activist. He regularly referenced key political figures from Ukraine’s history in his work, including writer and women’s rights advocate Lesia Ukrainka (1871-1913) and anarchist revolutionary Nestor Makhno (1888-1934). During his lifetime, he was actively engaged in street demonstrations for various leftist and anarchist causes. In 2024, he volunteered to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a mortar operator for a combat unit. On August 9, 2025, Chychkan was seriously wounded while fighting on the Zaporizhzhia front. On August 10, he died from his wounds at 39 years old. He is survived by his wife, young son, sister, and both parents.

*“I create images to produce numerous copies and reproductions. They are not meant for galleries, but for street walls, fences, entryways, and social media spaces, reaching the broad masses of workers. Only a limited number of people visit galleries, and for the most part, they are not the ones who would be interested in, disturbed by, or enraged by my work.”*
