Harvard Ukrainian Studies (HUS), the journal of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, serves as an international forum for new scholarship in Ukrainian Studies. It publishes articles, documents, reviews, and scholarly discussions in all fields of Ukrainian studies, though with a firm grounding in HURI’s traditional emphasis on the humanities. Related disciplines are also included when Ukrainian topics are treated within their framework. The editors are assisted by a distinguished international advisory board of scholars who work in disciplines related to the field.
Founded in March 1977 by Professors Omeljan Pritsak and Ihor Ševčenko, HUS first appeared as a quarterly, but later shifted to a publication schedule of double issues annually and occasionally single volumes. In addition to standard miscellaneous issues, thematic volumes are prominent: “The Kiev Mohyla Academy” (vol. 8, no. 1–2); “Concepts of Nationhood in Early Modern Eastern Europe” (vol. 10, no. 3–4); and the “Proceedings of the International Congress Commemorating the Millennium of Christianity in Rus’-Ukraine” (vol. 12–13), “Lviv: a City in the Crosscurrents of Culture”(vol. 24), and, most recently, a special issue titled “Ukrainian Church History” (vol. 26) are examples that have attracted special critical attention. Other volumes have been dedicated as Festschrifts for scholars who have made a special contribution to HURI’s development: Omeljan Pritsak (vol. 3–4), Ihor Ševčenko (vol. 7), Edward L. Keenan (vol. 19), Roman Szporluk (vol. 22), Michael Flier (vol. 28, forthcoming), and George G. Grabowicz (vol. 31, forthcoming).
