Donation Project Strengthens Ties with Ukrainian Institutions

Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the Institute has shared its publications with libraries and academic institutions in that country. Because of the often difficult economic situation for academic institutions and public libraries in Ukraine, materials have been sent as donations, with no costs incurred by the recipients. The Institute’s recent move from its longtime home at 1583 Massachusetts Ave. to its new location at 34 Kirkland Street provided an opportunity to undertake a new initiative and to widen the scope of this ongoing program with larger shipments and a more diverse range of recipients for books and journals. One of the chief goals of this most recent donation project has been to furnish a complete set of HURI publications to

institutions in as many regions of Ukraine as possible,

targeting university, research, public, and government libraries. These sets comprise all volumes of the journal

Harvard Ukrainian Studies still in print, as well as all

monograph series, including the Harvard Series in Ukrainian Studies and the Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature.

Great care was taken in determining where books would be donated. Criteria included geographic distribution, so that HURI books would be available in all regions of the country; profiles of receiving institutions, to ensure that as many institutions as possible with a broad academic or educational missions would receive materials; and locations, targeting those that had only partial sets of Institute publications, so that their collections could be made complete. Our recipients include the Parliamentary Library of Ukraine, the main public library in each of the twenty-six oblast capitals, and the libraries of the top universities in Ukraine. More than 12,000 lbs of materials (over 5,000 HURI books and 1,400 copies of HUS) were gathered for shipment. One hundred fifty-seven cartons (7,700 lbs) arrived at their destinations in Ukraine by March 2007.

The Institute wishes to acknowledge Alla Karasova, Institute Publications and Library Assistant, for completion of this project and coordinating the shipment, and we extend special thanks to Roman Malko, Representative of MEEST Corporation (http://www.meest.us/), for his assistance in shipping and delivering publications material at a special discounted rate.
