The Stefanyk Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, one of the largest libraries of Ukraine, stands heir to most of the famous pre-1939 libraries in Lviv, as well as most of the richest private and institutional manuscript collections in pre-Soviet Eastern Galicia. The library was officially founded in 1940 on the basis of earlier libraries, including the libraries of the Ossolineum (Biblioteka Zakladu Narodowego im. Ossolinskich--reestablished in Wroclaw in 1947), the Shevchenko Scientific Society (Biblioteka Naukovoho tovarystva im. Shevchenka-NTSh), and the Lviv National Home (Biblioteka Narodnoho domu). Indeed, the Lviv Academy Library consolidated the holdings of some eighty different libraries and separate manuscript collections that had developed over the centuries in the Lviv area. It was given the honorary name of Vasyl' Stefanyk in 1971.

LNB NAN manuscript holdings of over 100,000 units render them the second richest library in Ukraine. Dating principally from the fifteenth century to the present, there are now approximately 120 fonds comprising major collections, archival fonds, and personal papers. The manuscript division holds a number of major collections of manuscript books and is particularly rich in its fonds of personal papers, especially those of leading figures in the history and culture of Western Ukraine. Church Slavonic, Ukrainian, Polish, and Latin languages are most predominantly represented. However, there are important holdings in other Slavic languages, and also Hungarian.
In the course of the four decades since the library was founded, the holdings have been considerably rearranged and divided into fonds. In the case of materials that came from major cultural establishments, institutional records per se were separated from the library collections of manuscripts and personal papers. For example, those of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the Lviv National Home, and major family estate records were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Central State Historical Archive in Lviv (TsDIAL); records from smaller, local institutions were transferred to the oblast archive (DALO). Personal papers usually remained with institutional or private manuscript collections in the Academy Library, although the papers of some particularly important or politically sensitive individuals tended to be shifted to state archival jurisdiction. The result has often been a split or fragmentation in the disposition of some personal papers and local institutional records between the Academy Library and state archives in Lviv. To add further complexity to this problem, some important groups of personal papers and literary manuscripts were transferred to Kyiv, and approximately half of the Ossolineum manuscript collection was transferred to Wroclaw.

An essential starting point for researchers trying to identify the
tremendous wealth and variety of extant materials. It provides a brief description of the
personal papers of individuals or families held by the manuscript division, either as
individual fonds or as parts of major institutional collections. For each individual
family listed, there is a helpful biographic summary, with references to fond numbers and
previously published descriptions of the materials. The brief characterizations of
holdings provide a basic idea of the extent and nature of the materials available. The
second edition significantly extents the coverage to include many suppressed fonds that
could not be included in the 1977 directory.
