The archive was established in 1966, as a unique type of comprehensive cultural center, combining museum exhibitions with extensive archival resources in the field of Ukrainian literature and the arts and other in aspects of culture, including philology, ethnography, folklore, and popular culture from the period of Kyivan Rus' to the present.
TsDAMLM retains the records of a wide range of cultural organizations, institutions, and individuals in Ukraine. Holdings date primarily from the Soviet period, although there are scattered prerevolutionary materials. These include the records of many important cultural associations, organizations, professional unions, large literary and artistic publishing houses, museums, major Ukrainian theaters, and film studios. The rich Music Archive (Notenarchiv) of the Sing-Akademie in Berlin (including scores of the Bach family), held by TsDAMLM from 1973, was restituted to Germany in 2001; microfilms of the collection remain in TsDAMLM.
TsDAMLM has been actively consolidating the personal papers of writers, artists, musicians, architects, and other cultural figures of Ukraine. Recently many fonds of Ukrainian writers in exile have been acquired, and a few materials have been transferred from the archives of Soviet-period security services.
TsDAMLM has also been developing a large microfilm collection with photocopies of materials from other institutions in Russia and abroad regarding Ukrainian culture.
Access: Most of fonds in the archive are now open to researchers. Researchers should present an official letter from their sponsoring institution.
