The Central State Historical Archive in Lviv is now a centralized archive for historical documentation of Western Ukraine prior to the Soviet rule. The earliest formal predecessor of TsDIAL, the so-called Bernardine Archive was organized in 1784 under Austrian rule after the First Partition of Poland as a centralized archive for early court and administrative records and related historical documentation from the former Polish palatinates of Ruthenia and Belz. TsDIAL holds the records of the Lviv City Magistracy and related court and administrative activities from the period before the municipal reorganization of 1787.

The archive holds the main Galician Crownland governmental records from the period of the Austrian rule (1772-1918), including accumulated records of most state, administrative, judicial, and fiscal agencies associated with the Austrian administration of Galicia, along with extensive land cadastre and census records.

TsDIAL also retains central provincial records from Western Ukrainian lands under Poland during the interwar period (1919-1939), and records of many religious, cultural, and other non-governmental institutions and organizations from the years before the Soviet rule. There are also a few Nazi records from the wartime Nazi province of Galicia.

There are several groups of estate records, personal and family papers, miscellaneous collections of historical documents, and a large collection of cartographic materials.
