DAKO dates its origin to the Kyiv Central Historical Archive, which was founded in 1922 to house the prerevolutionary records of Kyiv guberniia. Since 1941 and the reorganization of Ukrainian archives following World War II, it has served as the principle repository for oblast-level records from both pre- and postrevolutionary agencies in the Kyiv region.
Since archival reorganization following Ukrainian independence, DAKO also includes, as a separate division, the holdings from the pre-1992 Party Archive of the Kyiv Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. These holdings embrace Party and Komsomol records from all agencies within Kyiv Oblast.
Access: Many of the formerly restricted files have been declassified in recent years, but some record groups and documents still have limited access. Some fonds are unavailable because of need for restoration.
