The Main Archival Administration was originally established in 1919 under the Out-of-School Department of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the UkrSSR, on the basis of the Archival-Library Section of All-Ukrainian Committee for Art and Antiquities, which had been founded earlier that year. After several reorganizations during the 1920s and early 1930s, it came under the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs in 1938, and subsequently the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1947. In 1960 it was reorganized under the Council of Ministers of the UkrSSR.
Today, the State Committee of Archives of Ukraine (Derzhkomarkhiv) is a structural part of the government of Ukraine. Its designated functions include the state legal control and centralized planning for the records of all state agencies, standardization and control of records management systems, the coordination of archival organization and research facilities, and the control and management of the National Archival Fond of Ukraine.
Access: Requests for research access should be addressed to individual archives. In all cases, researchers should present an official letter from their sponsoring institution stating their credentials and the subject and aim of their research.
